Alexander Shines in Season Finale

Posted Dec 30, 2012

Like he's done all season, Danario Alexander comes through with clutch TD.

On Oct. 18, 2012, the San Diego Chargers signed wide receiver Danario Alexander to help with wide receiver depth.

They likely had no idea he would lead the team in touchdowns while only playing in 10 games.

Neither did he.

“I don’t think anybody expected it,” Alexander said. “This was a great opportunity. Coach Norv Turner brought me in and gave me a good opportunity to come out here and make some plays. I tried to take advantage of every chance I got. It is the NFL. You have to prove what you can do each and every weekend. It’s what I’ve tried to stay focused on. It’s been a pretty good year for me. I’m pretty excited about it.”

Alexander capped off an abbreviated, though great 2012 season by hauling in a 34-yard touchdown in the 24-21 win over the Oakland Raiders.

It was his seventh touchdown in the past eight games, something that has only been done twice by a Charger in the past four years. The first was former wide receiver Vincent Jackson in 2009, followed by tight end Antonio Gates in 2010.

He finished the season with 37 receptions for 658-yards and seven touchdowns in just 10 games.

“I think just all the hard work I put into getting here,” Alexander said was the reason for his success this season. “I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, being cut from the Rams. I just made sure I was going to be ready, when I did get my chance, I was going to take advantage of it.”

Despite his success this season, Alexander was just happy to end the season on a positive note.

“It feels good,” Alexander said. “The main prize is getting a win. We’ve been through a lot of tough games and to finish the season out with these two wins, it’s an awesome feeling. It’s been a long season. I’ve only been here for a short time. We had a lot of ups and downs and for us to finish the season out like this is always good.”

Alexander quickly made a fan of the man throwing him those touchdowns.

“He’s our style of guy in the sense of what we’ve done over the last six years,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “He fits in to that mold of big, tall and can run. I think the one thing that stands out to me – I told Charlie (Whitehurst) when he came off the sideline – and (Danario) didn’t have that far to go with that pass to score, but his mentality is ‘I’m going to score if I get it.’ That’s his mentality, ‘If I get the ball, I’m going to score.’ That’s what he’s done.”

Alexander is a restricted free agent as of now and does not know if he has suited up as a Charger for the last time. But if it’s up to him, he’d love to be back.

“I like this team,” Alexander. “I love the city and I’m having a good time here. We’re going to see what happens next.”
