Bolts Host SDSU Coaches at Minicamp

Posted Jun 18, 2014

SDSU Head Coach Rocky Long and his assistants attended Wednesday's practice.

A familiar face chatted with General Manager Tom Telesco for the majority of the opening period of Wednesday’s practice.

San Diego State Head Coach Rocky Long and members of his staff were in attendance at minicamp, soaking up as much knowledge as humanly possible.  Long had an open invitation to catch practice when he’d like, and took advantage of that offer during the team’s final offseason session.

“It’s a good opportunity for them to come out and watch,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy.  “It’s always nice to help them out whenever we can.”

So what was Long hoping to gain by watching the two hour session?

“We’re always looking for ways to improve what we do at our level,” he said.  “These guys are the best of the best. We personally know some of the coaches and they invited us out, so we’re taking advantage of their offer.  I always want to hear other people’s perspective on why they do what they do.  So it’s fun to hear what they have to say.”

Overall, Long came away impressed with how the Chargers conduct their practices.

“I love the way their tempo is,” he said.  “Obviously Philip (Rivers) is as accurate a quarterback as I’ve ever seen.   They run around well…We look at their schemes and everything. (Defensive Coordinator) John Pagano and I were talking about how they cover bunch formations.  There are so many similar things that we do differently.  So you can always learn something out here.”

Long had one very familiar face on the field in former Aztec Vincent Brown.  While he wasn’t head coach when Brown played for SDSU, he was on the staff and knows him very well.

“We love all our guys who play at this level, but in this case he’s a special guy,” Long said.  “He’s not just a good football player, but he’s a special guy.  And he was a special guy in our program. So you always root for guys like that and are extremely happy when they find success.”

Likewise, Brown enjoyed having Long and Co. on the sidelines.

“It was cool looking over and seeing them,” he said.  “I got to talk to a few of them, and it’s always good to have Aztec coaches around.  I always appreciated them so it was great to see.”
