Bolts Mindful of New York's Pass Rush

Posted Dec 5, 2013

The Chargers are mindful of the Giants strong history of pressuring the passer.

The Chargers have done an admirable job of keeping Philip Rivers upright throughout the 2013 season. The Bolts quarterback has been sacked just 22 times, the fourth fewest of any team in the NFL.

A look at the stats around the league shows the New York Giants rank near the bottom in sacks having recorded 23 on the season.  However, that is an incredibly misleading stat.  Winning five of six games behind a reinvigorated pass rush, New York has turned it on as of late which will be a true test for the Bolts come Sunday.

“I think defensively, historically, they’ve always done a great job of getting after the quarterback,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy.  “They’ve always rushed them and put pressure on the quarterback and you see that on film.”

What the Chargers see on film is a defense that recorded five sacks one week ago against the Washington Redskins.  Justin Tuck led the way with four sacks which marked  the third-highest total by a Giant in franchise history. After entering the game with 2.5 QB takedowns, Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhunt says the team has to be wary of a dangerous sackmaster who is rounding into his usual form. But that holds true for the entire defense.

“They’re a team that plays well at the end of the season,” he said.  “That’s one of the things that’s been consistent with them and they’re playing good football now.  They’re physical up front.  As what you saw last Sunday, they can generate pressure on the quarterback especially Justin Tuck, who had to decide to start playing like that coming in, huh?”

Overall, Philip Rivers knows a tall task lies ahead of him in taking on the Giants defense, and he says it all begins with the guys in the trenches.

“I think their defense starts with their front,” he said. “It starts with those guys. They have (Jon Beason) in the middle and Antrel Rolle on the backend. It’s a very capable group as we all know. They got off to a slow start but it’s still the same team that for the most part has won a lot of football games together.”
