Bolts Strike Late Night Deal with Donald Brown

Posted Mar 11, 2014

The San Diego Chargers and running back Donald Brown have agreed to a three-year contract.

It appeared the first day of free agency would be a quiet one for the San Diego Chargers.

However, General Manager Tom Telesco was busy behind the scenes as the Bolts struck a three-year agreement with running back Donald Brown.  The duo have a history together as the Chargers general manager was a key member of the Indianapolis Colts front office when they selected Brown with the 27th overall pick out of Connecticut.

Over the first five seasons of his career, the 5-10, 207-pound rusher has carried the ball 551 times for 2,377 yards and 17 touchdowns.  Brown averages 4.3 yards per carry and is very secure with the football, having only one career fumble which came in his rookie season.    The 26-year old is also a weapon in the passing game, posting 83 career receptions for 767 yards and two touchdowns.

Brown is coming off one of his best seasons as he averaged a career-high 5.3 yards per carry and scored a career-high six rushing touchdowns in 2013.  Overall, he toted the ball 102 times for 537 yards while catching a career-high 27 passes for 214 yards and two touchdown receptions.  In the postseason, Brown ran 28 times for 118 yards and one rushing touchdown, and also chipped in with five catches for 50 yards and one touchdown reception.

Clearly excited to be joining the Chargers, Brown took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm over coming to San Diego.

The addition of Brown adds another dynamic rusher to the Chargers running back stable.  He joins Ryan Mathews, who ran for a career-high 1,255 yards in 2013, and Danny Woodhead, who set new personal highs as well with eight total touchdowns.  The Bolts also have Kerwynn Williams on the roster, who spent the majority of the 2013 season on the practice squad.
