Brown Eager to Form "Three-Headed Monster" in SD

Posted Mar 13, 2014

Donald Brown knew coming to the San Diego Chargers was the perfect situation.

Entering free agency, the Chargers boasted a pair of terrific runners coming off career seasons in Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead.

With the addition of Donald Brown, they now have a third rusher coming off his best year in the NFL, and the newest Bolt can’t wait to form a lethal triumvirate in San Diego.

“We’re going to be a three-headed monster,” he said proudly.  “That’s what we’re going to be.  They are great backs and I respect the heck out of both of them.  I’m excited to work with them and complement them the best that I can.”

In 2013, Brown carried the ball 102 times for 537 yards, averaging a career-high 5.3 yards per carry and scoring a career-high six rushing touchdowns. He also caught a career-high 27 passes for 214 yards and two scores.  Added together with Mathews and Woodhead, last season the three running backs combined for 2,221 yards on the ground with 14 rushing touchdowns, and 129 catches and nine touchdown receptions.

So what is Brown’s impression of his new teammates?

“Ryan is a very, very powerful runner,” he said.  “He runs with a great head of steam and is a very physical runner.  Danny, I was having this conversation with my old running backs coach, and I said he’s probably one of the most underrated running backs in the game.  I think he’s  one of the best all-around backs running the ball and catching the ball.  I’m happy to be in a great room (with them) because it’s going to help elevate my game and in part help this team.”

Brown has been lucky enough to play alongside two great quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck.  The allure of lining up alongside Philip Rivers made coming to San Diego even more attractive.

“I’ve had the honor of playing with some very, very good quarterbacks, and Philip is one of those too,” he said.  “So I’m honored and really excited about working with an elite quarterback like him.”

The Colts visited Qualcomm Stadium for a primetime contest in Week 6 last year, and the experience also played a role in his decision to join the Chargers.

“I took away what a great team this is,” he said. “They were so solid.  Their defense played great.   They throw everything at you but the kitchen sink.  And on offense, it’s led by a phenomenal quarterback, the offensive line dominated that game and the running backs ran the ball well.  So this is a playoff caliber team and it’s going to be no different this year.”

Thus, helping form a formidable trio of rushers, playing alongside Rivers and getting to suit up for a team with high aspirations made signing in San Diego too good an opportunity to pass up.

“I’m ecstatic to be a San Diego Charger,” he said.  “This is just a great fit.  Looking at the free agency process, this was a no brainer.  This is where I needed to be and this is where I wanted to be.  So I’m excited about what this team has in store and I look forward to building on that. In my heart of hearts I know this is the right fit.”
