Can WR Dontrelle Inman's Success Carry Over?

Posted Jun 17, 2014

The CFL star receiver has impressed teammates and coaches so far this offseason.

When Dontrelle Inman inked his contract with the Chargers on January 6, it didn’t make much noise.  The Bolts signed the CFL star to a reserve/futures deal just one day after their Wild Card win over the Cincinnati Bengals, so the team and fans were in the midst of playoff fever.

While it may have gone relatively unnoticed at the time, Inman has made waves this offseason, impressing teammates and coaches with his reliable hands and big plays.

The question now is if Inman can translate his CFL success to the Bolts.  The 6-3, 205-pounder flourished over two years with the Toronto Argonauts.  He snared 50 passes for 739 yards and six touchdowns in 2013, one year after helping the team capture the Grey Cup with another 50 catch effort for 803 yards and five touchdowns.  Overall he caught 100 passes for 1,542 yards and 11 scores, averaging 15.4 yards per reception.  Inman believes his experience north of the border will pay huge dividends as he aims to make his mark in the NFL.

“It’s a very good league, and a professional league,” he explained.  “I was in a professional organization with a lot of guys who fell just short of making the NFL.  So they have a lot of talent.  It’s very close to the NFL like that.  So the talent level is up there, and it helped me learn how to be a pro.  It helps you develop your game.”

This isn’t Inman’s first time with an NFL team.  The wideout was in Jacksonville prior to the 2011 season, which was a unique experience as it was shortened due to the NFL lockout.  Thus, Inman strongly believes he is more prepared for training camp than he was three years ago as an undrafted rookie out of Virginia.

“I’m absolutely more prepared,” he said.  “I know how to prepare now and how to practice.  I know how to get better every day and learn from the little things.”

Inman is a true team player who will do whatever it takes to help the team win.  Last year that included chipping in as punter when Toronto’s was injured for a game.  A testament to his versatility, Inman was called up and he unleashed three punts for 88 yards.   Still, his prowess as a wide receiver is what made him a highly sought upon free agent.  While he had numerous suitors, Inman believes the Chargers fit him perfectly.

“I like the style of offense here,” he explained.  “I knew this would be a place I could learn and get better.  They have a great group of veteran receivers and a great veteran quarterback.  The coaching staff is also awesome here, so that drew my interest also.  I had a good amount of teams that had interest and I worked out for.  After going through it with my agent, this was my best fit. So I’m excited to be here.  I can’t wait to get out there and Bolt Up!”
