Chargers Hold 25th Annual Salute to Service

Posted Aug 30, 2013

The San Diego Chargers held their 25th Annual Salute to Service this past week.

The fourth preseason game had special meaning for the San Diego Chargers as it marked the team’s 25th Annual Salute to Service celebration.

The festivities kicked off the day before the game against the San Francisco 49ers when the team held a walk-through onboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.  Check out the video below and this photo gallery of the Chargers on-board.

“San Diego is a military town and the Chargers are a part of this community,” said general manager Tom Telesco. “So to come out and thank everybody from the sailors to the navy community, for us, is rewarding.  When I first arrived here in January, Vice Admiral (David) Buss invited me over to his house for dinner with his wife, and it was a really nice gesture by them to welcome me to this city. I told him at the time if there was ever a way to do anything for him, I'd do it, and I knew the Chargers in the past had practice on an aircraft carrier.  So it was a great idea, and it’s a way to thank them for their support.”

On the morning of the game, sailors from the Navy’s amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego and the submarine USS San Francisco competed in a flag football game, with the USS San Diego coming out victorious.

The game kicked off with Vice Admiral Buss doing the coin toss and the celebration continued at half time with a performance by the nationally renowned rock n roll band Madison Rising  led by Navy veteran Dave Bray.  They performed their stirring rendition of The Star Spangled Banner right after the Wounded Warriors were honored.

And last but not least, the Charger Girls showed up in full force clad in their commemorative military outfits. Click here to see.
