Chargers Path to the Draft: Part Three

Posted Apr 19, 2013

Part three of our Path to the Draft feature highlights the final weeks leading up to draft day.

The final few weeks leading up to the NFL draft are as important a step as any other in the process. To discuss what goes on during the important month of April, we spoke with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Spanos in part three of our Path to the Draft feature.

Basically, the weeks leading up to the draft are composed of two main features – meeting with the scouts and hosting player visits.

After spending all year watching and evaluating each player available to be selected, the entire scouting staff arrives at Chargers Park to produce final grades on the prospects. While they don’t make major changes to their draft board per se, the meetings serve as the finishing touch to a long process.

“Right now, really what we’re doing is tying up any loose ends and going over sort of the small details of the board,” said Spanos. “The heavy lifting so to speak is done. We started this process all the way back in August.  The bulk of your work and evaluations are done then.   Now you’re just tweaking the board, putting the final touches, tying up any loose ends in terms of ‘Do we have all the information we need? Is there anything that we’re missing?’ Then let’s go get those pieces of information.”

The other crucial element is player visits.  Each team is able to bring up to 30 draft eligible players in for a visit to gain further information on them.  According to Spanos, there are two types the Chargers bring in.  The first are players they saw at the combine but they want to further investigate and spend more time with. The other kind is the players who weren’t at the combine or played in any all-star games, so they want to get to know them better.

Watch the video above to hear what Spanos had to say as he explains the importance of the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft.
