Clary, Hardwick Add Big Surprise to “Free Cone Day”

Posted Apr 8, 2014

Celebrity scoopers Jeromey Clary and Nick Hardwick served fans for a good cause.

If you headed to Ben and Jerry’s at Seaport Village on Tuesday, also known as “Free Cone Day, ” to score some ice cream, odds are you got an additional scoop of Chargers flavor.

Chargers own Jeromey Clary and Nick Hardwick were out scooping ice cream for a good cause raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego, a cause dear to Clary’s heart over the past four years.

“It’s cool to come down here and serve all these fans,” he said.  “Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great program.  To help kids with an adult mentor relationship is huge.  Growing up I was lucky that I had both my dad and my mom at the house.  It is instrumental to have that in your life, so I’m happy to be here helping out a good cause.”

Clary and Hardwick spent the majority of the afternoon scooping for hundreds of patrons, dishing out tasty treats on a hot San Diego afternoon.  There was a long line to order, but for many it was well worth it when they got to the counter and were pleasantly surprised to see the Chargers greet them.

“This is a beautiful thing,” said Marcus Holmes, who donned a Chargers’ polo alongside his three-year old daughter Mia.  “This is a great thing for kids to see.  This is the offseason and they are donating their time.  This is way beyond the call.  They are really here to serve the community, and they gave a real good scoop!”

According to Big Brothers Big Sisters Marketing Director Tina Rose, this is just the latest of many examples in which the two Bolts assisted their program.

“We thought this was a great opportunity to have Jeromey and Nick come out and bring awareness to Big Brothers Big Sisters, and our need for more volunteers and more funding to support our programs,” she explained.  “These guys are incredible.  They have done so much for us.  Anytime we call they are there. They just have the hugest hearts.  I always say to them that their hearts are bigger than they are!  They just give and give and give and never ask for anything in return.  It brings them joy, so that makes us happy.”

Ben and Jerry’s store manager Ephraim had a big grin on his face as he watched the two Chargers’ stars serve the customers.

“I’m very impressed these guys want to come and help out with something as simple as scooping ice cream,” he said. “This is fun and exciting for us.  They are great guys for doing this.”

Still, he and his fellow coworkers noted that Clary had the edge on Hardwick when it came to form and scooping ability.  As is always the case, Hardwick embraced the good natured ribbing.

“I’ll do anything for a true friend like Jeromey,” he said.  “He asked and I’m here because that’s what true friends do and it’s a good cause.  It’s a beautiful day, there are tons of people and a long line.  Now they are telling me that Jeromey is the better scooper.  I’m ok with that.  I’m working on my game.  I’m not real savvy in the kitchen; I’m not ashamed to admit that.  But I’m improving while I’m here. Next time I’ll be even better!”
