Mere minutes after being selected with the 25th overall selection, cornerback
Chargers.com: So how does it feel to be a San Diego Charger?
Verrett: It’s an absolute blessing! I’m going to be only a couple hours away from home so I’m excited to be out there and ready to get things rolling.
Chargers.com: Can you describe what the phone call was like when the Chargers called you?
Verrett: When I got that phone call my heart dropped. Just for the fact that I always wanted to be a San Diego
Chargers.com: For fans that might not be familiar with you, who is Jason Verrett?
Verrett: I’m a hard working guy. I had to go through the Juco route and I handled adversity as a young corner. I had to experience something not a lot of other college players had to as far as going a different route out of high school. So I have played with a lot of chips on my shoulder and I’m definitely a motivated person.
Chargers.com: I guess that’s the reason you’ve been touted as the most competitive guy in this draft.
Verrett: I’m not the biggest guy out there so I have to show the competitor in me and my physicality. I showed that on the game film and I’m ready to get to San Diego, get things rolling and learn from the coaches and teammates. I want to get us to the next level.
Chargers.com: Of course everyone wants to ask you about your height. Why is that an asset and not a hindrance?
Verrett: Just look at my vertical. I was able to jump a 39.5 inch vertical. I played taller receivers in college. I play with a chip on my shoulder. My height is what it is. It’s not going to stop me from playing my game.
Chargers.com: The last time the Chargers drafted a first round pick out of TCU was LaDainian Tomlinson. How does it feel to follow in his footsteps?
Verrett: It’s definitely crazy! Thinking how LT went here in the first round and now I am, I just want to carry over the legacy he left here in the same way.
Chargers.com: You have a Pro Bowl safety you’ll be joining in the secondary in
Verrett: Oh he is definitely a playmaker. He’s someone I look forward to learning from and playing with. I’m pretty sure he’s going to push me to make us one of the best secondaries in the conference. We’re going to make a lot of plays out there.
Chargers.com: Do you prefer to play on the outside or in the slot?
Verrett: It doesn’t matter at all. I’ve shown that I can play the slot and I’ve shown I can play on the outside level. Wherever they want me to play I’m going to be there and make plays.
Chargers.com: Is there a certain game you had in college you are most proud of?
Verrett: Definitely the LSU game. A lot of people didn’t think I could play the way I play against that quality of receiver, and I went out there and played my butt off. I feel like that film showed a lot.
Chargers.com: A lot of fans on Twitter want to know if you will have a chip on your shoulder being the fourth cornerback taken.
Verrett: Not at all. I’m just blessed to be in the situation I’m in. If I was the first corner or the 10th corner, I just feel like my story is already written. I feel like God has his plan ahead for me and the 25th pick is what he wanted and I’m going to carry that over to the next level and play the way I can.
Chargers.com: Finally this is your first chance to give the San Diego Chargers fans a message. What do you want to tell them?
Verrett: Bolt Up! Let’s get it!
