Ghee Embracing a “Fresh Start” in San Diego

Posted Mar 14, 2014

New cornerback Brandon Ghee is embracing a fresh start with the Chargers.

It’s clear there is one thing on Brandon Ghee’s mind now that he is a San Diego Charger.

A fresh start.

In fact, when talking for the first time about joining the Bolts, Ghee used the phrase “fresh start” four times in the first two minutes.

“It feels good to be here because it’s a fresh start,” he began.  “The past years are in the past.  Hopefully I can come and contribute.  Everybody’s goal here is to win the Super Bowl, so that is what I’m trying to do.  The Chargers eliminated us in the playoffs last year, and I wasn’t sure what my future held.  I was still shocked because our season was over.  But that’s all over with and it’s a fresh start.  I had a good talk with the GM and the coaches, so that’s why I agreed to the deal.”

The biggest struggle the cornerback has faced thus far has been injuries, which he’s fought over his four year career with the Cincinnati Bengals.  Right when he was about to play a significant role for the team in 2012, a severe wrist injury in training camp forced him to miss the entire season. Last year, he suffered the second concussion of his career which cost him the first three weeks of the season.  Ghee returned for one game only to be sidelined again after suffering a thigh injury  until Week 7.  Overall, he’s appeared in just 23 games over his career, including a career-high 10 in 2013.  Last season he registered six tackles with five passes defensed.

At 6-0, 200-pounds, Ghee’s talent has never been in question. The Bengals had high hopes for the defensive back after selecting him in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft (96th overall) out of Wake Forest.  He will be just 27 years old when the season starts, and is eager to show the world that he still has a bright future ahead of him.

“I can do it all,” he said confidently.  “I can cover.  I can hit.  I’m not one of those corners that are afraid to come up. I can help on special teams if they need me there.  I’m a great athlete.  I think that’s what everyone will see on Sundays.”

Ghee is also grateful to have a clean slate, and he’s determined to use that opportunity to earn playing time with the Bolts.

“The Chargers made me feel wanted, and what I liked best is they are allowing me to compete,” he said.  “I’m going to get a fair shot. I have a fresh start and they are going to let the best person play.  That’s why I really wanted to come here.  Everyone knows this is a great organization and I’m just glad to be here.”
