For the past year, kickers have been a focal point of the NFL’s offseason discussions.
With extra point conversions relatively automatic, the league has been trying to come up with ways to make them more challenging.
At the 2014 NFL Owners’ Meeting, a proposition to move one-point extra point kicks to the defensive team’s 25-yard line was tabled, yet a new proposition was enforced for preseason. For the 2014 Hall of Fame Game and the first two weeks of the preseason, extra points will be spotted at the 15-yard line making each XP attempt roughly 33-yards long.
All three extra points attempted in Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game matchup between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills were made.
With Novak set to kick for the team’s first preseason game, what does he think of these new and proposed changes?
“I think it only increases the value of the kicker,” Novak said. “If the goal is to make it more difficult and see a lower percentage of (extra points), I think kickers will just adapt. A longer extra point may be more difficult for a kicker on cold weather teams, but we can adapt to anything.”
