Jamal Williams Honored to Announce Second Round Pick

Posted May 6, 2014

Former star nose tackle Jamal Williams will announce the Chargers second round pick on draft day.

It’s been five years since Jamal Williams last suited up for the Chargers, but the former fan-favorite has been fanatical in keeping tabs on his former team.

That’s why he was both humbled and honored the team asked him to announce their second round draft choice this Friday at Radio City Music Hall.

“This is very special to me,” he said. “I’m just honored to represent the San Diego Chargers.  I’m very excited to go to New York and represent this great organization.  The Chargers fans are the best.  They always gave us love and I’m excited and appreciate the chance to be a part of this.”

It also brings Williams full circle.  The long-time nose tackle was initially a second round pick of the Bolts in the Supplemental Draft in 1998, so he’s relishing the opportunity to actually announce this year’s second rounder at the draft.

“It’s sweet because during the Supplemental Draft I didn’t have the opportunity to go to Radio City Music Hall or go through any of this process,” he explained.  “And to be actually calling the pick for the second round when that is what I was is pretty exciting.  It’s like wow, how about that turn around?”

Williams enjoyed a lengthy, fruitful career in America’s Finest City.  He notched 310 tackles, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles over 12 seasons, but that doesn’t tell the full story.  “Jamal the Wall” did a ton of dirty work, gobbling up multiple linemen in order to free up other defenders to make the big play.  Williams was also a three-time All Pro selection, three-time Pro Bowler and a member of the Chargers 50th Anniversary Team.

“Now that I’m retired I really soak in every moment I got to spend as a Charger,” he said.  “Every moment.  Every play.  Every time I walked through the offices or on the field.  The time I got to spend with the fans.  I took in every moment while I was there.”

While he misses being a part of the team, Williams now relishes the time he gets to spend with his family.  He has three daughters and has another child on the way, but he’s looking forward to pinching in for the Bolts once again by announcing the second round draft choice.

“They contacted me and asked if I’d be interesting and I was like ‘Heck yeah!’” Williams recounted.  “I said how I’d be honored.  So this is all very sweet.”
