John Phillips Punctuates Win Over Cardinals

Posted Aug 28, 2014

The tight end had a game-high four catches for 37-yards.

Just eight months after injuring his knee in Week 16’s game against the Oakland Raiders, tight end John Phillips made a big impact in his third game back on the field under the lights at Qualcomm.

In the final preseason game of the 2014 season, Phillips had four catches for 37-yards.  Phillips matched his entire 2013 season in receptions in just the first quarter during Thursday’s 12-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

While Phillips is primarily used for his blocking abilities, he was certainly glad to be on the receiving end by the Chargers again.

“It’s expected because you want to get targets the last preseason game so any time you’re going to get that many targets you’re going to have catches,” Phillips said.  “The trainers here did a great job and I’m just fortunate enough to heal and recover and be out there playing again.”

After the injury in December 2013, Phillips spent the offseason diligently working as hard as he can to rehab his knee and get back to game-shape crediting his trainers with his speedy progress.

“They stayed on me,” he said.  “I liked to push my rehab and they pulled the reigns on me when I was getting a little out of control.  But they pushed me when I needed to so they just did a good job with working with me and getting me healthy.”

Phillips also said his teammates and Tight Ends Coach Pete Metzelaars helped him with his recovery saying the camaraderie between them is infectious and overwhelmingly positive.

As for Head Coach Mike McCoy, Phillips mentioned he too worked with Phillips individually to get him back on track for the preseason and beyond.

“Coach McCoy eased me back in during training camp progressively,” he said.  “He  (helped me) do certain stuff like twisting and point of attack and built a plan to get where I’m now.”
