Late Game Meltdown Dooms Bolts

Posted Nov 25, 2012

With 7:51 left in the game, the San Diego Chargers led the 8-2 Baltimore Ravens by a score of 13-3.

The defense, despite losing key starters, showed its ability to stop Baltimore’s high-powered offense and put the Chargers in a position to grab the victory.

10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter by the Ravens, including a 30-yard catch-and-run by running back Ray Rice on a fourth down and 29 yards to go that set up the game-tying field goal at the end of regulation, forced the game into overtime.

The Chargers received the ball to start the overtime, feeling confident and looking to end the contest with a touchdown.

“Whenever we go into overtime, that’s the mindset we have,” defensive back Marcus Gilchrist said. “Especially us getting the ball, offense getting the ball, we were confident.”

Unfortunately, the Chargers were forced to punt after reaching midfield. After forcing the Ravens to do the same, the Bolts got the ball back but went three-and-out, giving Baltimore the chance to steal the victory.

And steal the victory they did.

After starting the possession at its own 11-yard line again, Baltimore drove down to the Chargers 47-yard line, but faced a third-and-10. Flacco connected with wide receiver Torrey Smith for a 31-yard gain and a first down at San Diego’s 16-yard line. Flacco kneeled down three times in a row, before giving way to Tucker, who knocked in the game-winning field goal from 38 yards out to give the Ravens the 16-13 overtime win.

“It definitely upsets the stomach when things like that happen,” defensive end Corey Liuget said. “But, it happens. You just have to bounce back and try and go make the next play and the next play and the next play and stop them and get off the field. We just have to go out and execute as a defense. We did it for the most part. We know what comes every play and every snap. We just have to go out and make it happen.”
