Mathews Opens Up About Chargers Changes

Posted Mar 29, 2013

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews joined NFL network Friday to discuss his rehab from injury, the new Chargers coaching staff and much more.

In case you missed it, Ryan Mathews joined NFL Network this morning and addressed a number of topics ranging from the new Chargers regime, his rehab process, the addition of Danny Woodhead, and much more.

The first topic discussed was new head coach Mike McCoy and what he expects from him when the team reports for Phase One of the offseason this Monday.

“He is going to have a lot of changes for us,” Mathews said. “We have that meeting in the morning and I heard it’s already going to be long.  But I know he’s going to set a good plan up for us to execute what we need to execute the upcoming season.”

Mathews also spoke highly of new offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, explaining  the differences between what he expects the system to be this season compared to years past.

“I think it’s going to be a little bit simpler than what we had,” he said. “I think we’re going to run the ball hopefully more.  That’s my big thing.  I want to run the ball and really prove to everybody that I can do it well.  But I think he’s going to bring a different dynamic to our offense and it’s going to be fun to be a part of it.”

In order to be a big part of it, Mathews needs to stay healthy, unlike last season suffering from not one but two broken clavicles.

“I’ve been in the facility working going and getting rehab, just doing my best to really just get myself back to where I want to be at,” he said. “I just need to stop taking so many hits.  I need to quit fighting for the extra yards when I don’t need to.  And I think I’ve had a little bit of bad luck too.  I broke both my collarbones and that’s rare.  I’ve asked everybody how often does that happen and they said never.  So it’s a bit of a luck thing with me, so I just need to play my part and keep doing what I’m doing and keep working.”

Mathews also said he welcomes the addition of Danny Woodhead to the running back corps and believes he will be a useful piece to the offensive puzzle.

“We’ve got a tight knit group in our running back group already,” he said. “I think he’s going to fit right in.  I haven’t met him yet or anything, but I’ve seen some interviews and he seems like a guy that’s going to fit in real well with us.  I’ve seen him play, and he plays hard and he plays big.  He’s going to be a good back for us and will fit right in.”

Finally, Mathews stated how intense he believes the upcoming months will be because with a new coaching regime, the players have to compete for their spot on the field.

“We’ve got a new face to the program with the coaching staff,” he said. “I think everyone (sees it as) a new time to prove themselves and to really get going.  Everyone’s going to compete for their spot coming up in minicamps and OTA’s and (training) camp.  The coaches are going to see who can get in there and play and who can’t.”
