Mathews, Weddle Earn PFWA All-AFC Honors

Posted Jan 13, 2014

Ryan Mathews and Eric Weddle were named to the PFWA All-AFC team.

After a season that took the NFL mostly by storm, it is to be expected that the Chargers earn a number of accolades.  First, Philip Rivers and Eric Weddle were named Pro Bowlers.  Then it was announced that Rivers is a finalist for the FedEx Air Player of the Year and Keenan Allen is up for the Pepsi Next Rookie of the year.

On Monday, more honors were dished out as Weddle and Ryan Mathews were named to the All-AFC Team by the Professional Football Writers of America.

Weddle was one of two safeties named to the squad as he amassed 115 tackles to lead the Chargers.  It was his second consecutive year eclipsing the century mark and was the third total in his seven year career.  He tied for the team lead with two interceptions during the regular season and ranked second with 10 passes defensed.

Mathews, meanwhile, was one of just two running backs to be named to the All-AFC Team, joining the Kansas City Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles.  In his fourth professional season, Mathews had a career-year.  He ran for a personal best 1,255 yards, the eighth best mark in franchise history and seventh-highest in the NFL this year.  It was his second career 1,000-yard season, and he topped 100 yards in six games, the second most in the NFL.
