McCoy on Floyd: "He Looks Like the Old Malcom"

Posted May 27, 2014

Fully cleared for contact, Malcom Floyd's return highlighted the Chargers first OTA of the year.

There are few things better on a spring day than watching the San Diego Chargers back on the practice field.

That especially holds true seeing the man in the white number 80 jersey.

A little over eight months after suffering a career-threatening neck injury in the second game of the season, Malcom Floyd was an active participant in the team’s first OTA of the season.  The veteran wide receiver is fully cleared for contact and was back to his old ways, snaring passes and making big plays on the field.

“It’s great to have guys like Malcom back out there,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy.  “Get his smiling face out there.  He keeps telling me that he owes me something, and I keep telling him just keep playing.  It’s great to have him back out there. He’s worked extremely hard to get back to where he is. He deserves everything.  He’s worked so hard and that’s why he’s played so long in this league....It was great to have him out there today.  He looked and moved around like the old Malcom.  So we’re off to a good start with him.”

In typical Floyd fashion, the humble wideout isn’t satisfied simply to be back; he wants to make an impact.

“I hope I can add some more firepower,” he said.  “I felt really good today.  Today’s down and we’re looking forward to tomorrow and just getting better...I’m not tentative.  I’m very confident and just eager to go back out there.  I want to start where I left off at.  I’m very excited.”

Floyd doubted whether or not he’d ever get to play again as recent as three months ago.  But no matter how bleak it may have seemed some days, he never gave up hope that he could return.

“Maybe about three months ago (I wasn’t sure), but I eventually got over the hump and I knew this day was coming,” he explained.  “Just the pain (was less), and (after) dealing with the doctor I knew I’d be here healthy and 100%.”

While there were many factors that drove the popular wideout to once again play the game he loves, his passion is a driving force as to why he was able to return.

“I didn’t give up (and) just stayed working out every day,” he said. “There were some questions there, but I just didn’t give up.  The doctors said there was a chance of me getting back out there, so I just kept working and now I’m here.”

Chemistry with the quarterback is of the utmost importance for a wide receiver.  While Philip Rivers hasn’t thrown to Floyd in quite some time, the pair’s 11 years of experience overcomes any rust that may have formed.

“He’s one of the guys I could not throw to for a year and pick it up in about 30 minutes,” said Rivers.  “But it is good to have him out there because you start to see how some things come together, and you tailor things like we've always done to what guys you have.  So when you have a guy like Malcom, you certainly want to use him to his strengths.”

After seeing him back in action, the Chargers expect to have the same old Floyd back in the fold.

“I know he feels good, he feels strong, he feels confident,” said Rivers.  “He looks great.  We all expect him to be the Malcom we’ve always known.”
