Miramar Honors Chargers with Special Ceremony

Posted Jun 11, 2014

The Bolts visited Miramar on Tuesday for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Around 4:30pm Tuesday night, Sean Lissemore flew an F/A 18 fighter jet at supersonic speed over Qualcomm Stadium and the rest of San Diego.

At least it seemed that way as the defensive lineman and his teammates were able to fly a multi-million dollar state of the art flight simulator that is used to train the marines on base.

“That was unreal,” Lissemore said when he left the cockpit.  “How often do you get a chance to fly a simulator like that?  It’s pretty special that they let us do something like this.”

The simulator was one of many unique experiences present as Miramar held a special Evening Colors Ceremony in honor of the San Diego Chargers.  The entire organization also toured four aircrafts including an F/A 18 Hornet, MV-22 Osprey, KC-130 Hercules and CH-53E Sea Stallion, T-34C.

“The reason why this is so meaningful to us is because the Chargers give back so much,” said Maj. Gen. Steven Busby.  “What they do for the community and everybody else is just phenomenal.  So we had the Chargers come out here to thank them for who they are.  It was great to show them the marines and have the type of personal contact they are having today.”

The highlight of the night was the emotional ceremony honoring the Chargers’ commitment to the armed forces in front of 5,000 marines. President Dean Spanos and Head Coach Mike McCoy each spoke at the festivities, thanking them for all they do for our country.

“This is very special because these are men and women who do incredible things for our country,” Spanos said.  “Everything we get to do today wouldn’t be possible without them.  We can never do enough to thank them, and we all feel very fortunate to do whatever we can for them.”

The head coach echoed those same sentiments.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for us really to thank them for everything they do for us and our country,” McCoy said.  “We play the greatest game in the world, but without them we wouldn’t have that opportunity.”
