Novak's Big Foot Accomplishes Rare Feat

Posted Dec 9, 2012

As if kicking a 50-yard field goal wasn’t hard enough, kicking at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh with the wind and cold raises the difficult level. To put it simply, only four field goals have been good from 50 yards in Heinz Field history.

Yet, Charger Nick Novak lined up for a 51-yard field goal late in the first quarter and connected, making his 51-yarder only the fifth 50 -yard field goal at Heinz Field.

The field goal was also the second longest in history, behind former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed, who knocked in a 52-yarder in 2010, and University of Pittsburgh redshirt junior Kevin Harper, who booted in a 52-yarder in 2011, the longest field goal by a college kicker at Heinz Field.

“It’s great to be a part of the guys who have made 50-plus yarders here,” Novak said after the game.  “It’s difficult conditions here, and we actually got kind of lucky the rain held off until late.  The wind wasn’t as bad as it could have been, so thank God for that. But it’s not just me who kicks those field goals.  It’s everyone that’s involved, so it’s a team.”

Novak is now 15-of-17 on field goals this season and 1-of-3 on attempts of 50 plus, after missing his previous two attempts. The 51-yard field goal is also his season-long and the second-longest of his career.
