THIS STORY INITIALLY RAN ONE YEAR AGO, DETAILING THE PLANS OF THEN NEWLY HIRED MIKE McCOY. ON THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HIS HIRING, READ BELOW TO SEE WHAT HIS PLANS WERE IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEING HIRED.
At his introductory press conference, Mike McCoy began to lay out his plan as new head coach of the San Diego Chargers.
To say he is well prepared for the job and has a clear cut vision would be an understatement.
McCoy is determined to provide structure down to the last minute detail. In fact, one of his first orders of business is to sit down with General Manager Tom Telesco to make sure no stone goes unturned.
“(We’ll) have a detailed plan here that Tom and I are going to put together,” he stated matter-of-factly. “All of the schedules we are doing for OTAs, mini camps, how the players are going to eat during training camp, meals, times of practices, how we are going to go on the road if we are going to the east coast, if we are leaving on Fridays or Saturdays for road trips. We are going to have a detailed plan. There is not just one way to do this. We are going to work together as an organization. The Chargers have done things differently in the past. There is going to be some change. Mr. Spanos and I were talking yesterday about changing some things. There is a reason for change. Change is good sometimes in organizations. We just have to make the most of the opportunity we have moving forward.”
Even though he has a strong background on the offensive side of the ball calling plays, McCoy plans to bring in an offensive coordinator who will fill that role for the Bolts. Still, he will be heavily involved in the game-planning and instillation of the offense. McCoy also plans to have an open door policy with his players, working with them tirelessly to develop the best game plan possible.
“I think that is our job as a football coach, to find out what our players do best,” he said. “The players are going to give us a lot of input. We don’t have all the answers as coaches. Nobody has got all of the answers in this business. It is going to be open arms to where we can say defensively, offensively, special teams, what do our players do best and take advantage of talent we have here.”
One such player who surely will have a big say is
“I’m going to sit down with Philip the next couple of days and really get a lot of input from him and some other players also,” he said. “I will ask them what happened and for any advice. Where can we help them as a coaching staff? What changed? I’m going to leave that open to them to give me some input. I have not watched every game from last year. We are going to do that here in the next couple of weeks without a doubt. We’ll find out. I’ll ask Philip some tough questions and things but we will see what happens.”
McCoy wasted no time in doing that, meeting with Rivers late into the early evening yesterday.
From the moment McCoy stepped into Chargers Park yesterday, he exuded a positive energy. After hearing him speak at length, his unquestionable passion about the game combined with his even keel presence on the field brings a unique and exciting perspective to the Chargers.
“You’re not going to see me on the practice field yelling and screaming a lot,” he said. “I’m a laid back person to a certain extent but as coaches we all snap sooner or later. Don’t be surprised if you see me a couple days calm, cool and collected then all of the sudden Philip does something and I might lose it every once and a while. It will be the same thing on game day. I try to stay even keel as much as possible.”
Meanwhile, both Telesco and McCoy emphasized how they are a partnership and that they will work hand-in-hand on personnel decisions as well.
“It’s a partnership, so we’re joined at the hip all the way through this,” said Telesco. “We’re never going to sign a player, draft a player or cut a player without running it through him. We’re always going to run it through him. Ultimately, it’s my decision, but if you have two football people who have done their work, you have discussions and you never have arguments. You usually come to a conclusion and like Mike said, it’s an organizational decision once it’s come to that.”
There are still countless decisions that need to be made, but it is clear that McCoy has a vision and has already begun working for that vision to become a reality.
