As he scanned the field, Spurlock started right, saw an opening and made a quick cut left up the right hash marks through the traffic.

99 yards later, Micheal Spurlock was in the end zone being congratulated by teammates after giving the Chargers a 7-0 lead just 12 seconds into the game.
“We did see an opening,” Spurlock said. “Whoever it was cleaned somebody up and Brink (Curtis Brinkley) made a nice block and we hit it from there and the rest was history.”
Last week against the New York Jets, Spurlock returned a punt 63-yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game. He is the first player in Chargers history with a punt return and kickoff return for a touchdown in consecutive weeks.
So what’s the reason for his recent success?
“The other 10 guys that are out there,” Spurlock said. “They are just going out there, working hard, getting their blocks. They make my job real easy. I see a hole and just try to hit it and run as fast as I can. We got a touchdown from it and we’re just trying to keep it up, help the special teams get points.”
Despite a steady six-year NFL career returning punts and kickoffs, Spurlock did not remember having a two-week span as successful as this one.
“I can’t say that I have,” Spurlock said. “It’s one I’m going to have to sit back, look at it and kind of enjoy it, but it’s fun. Anything to help the team win is good. We got wins out of it, so that makes it even better.”
The 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the third of his career and the longest. His last kickoff return for a touchdown came in 2010 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Combined with punts, it was Spurlock’s sixth total return for a touchdown.
