In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Georgia inside linebacker Alec Ogletree.
Name: Alec Ogletree
Weight: 242 LBS
Position: Inside Linebacker
Alec Ogletree is an outstanding linebacker who flew somewhat under the radar playing next to Jarvis Jones at Georgia. In fact, some might know him better because of his off the field issues instead of his impressive performances on it. Regardless, he is a dynamic player who has a shot to be productive immediately as a rookie.
Ogletree began his tenure at Georgia as a safety before converting to inside linebacker the past two seasons. At the position, he amassed 163 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss and six sacks. Ogletree recorded most of those stats this past season as a junior when he flashed his big play ability by totaling 111 tackles, 11.5 for a loss and three sacks.
Being a converted safety, Ogletree’s best attribute is his top-end speed and ability to cover the entire field from sideline to sideline to chase down the ball carrier. He shreds blockers with relative ease and is disruptive in the backfield. Ogletree is also a bone-crushing tackler who explodes into the opposition. Another key attribute for him is his ability to succeed against both the run and the pass. He is strong in coverage and is showing improved ball skills in addition to his knack for pressuring the quarterback.
Even though he has the skills of a surefire first round draft pick, there are many who speculate he could slip to day two due to his past brushes with the law. Still, Ogletree is adamant that he has matured since his past indiscretions, and if that truly is the case, he is primed to be an impact player in the NFL.
