Prospect Profile: Carlos Hyde

Posted Apr 13, 2014

Learn more about Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Ohio State’s Carlos Hyde.

Name: Carlos Hyde
School: Ohio State
Height: 6-0
Weight: 230 pounds
Position: Running Back

An extremely popular topic among draftniks has been the recent trend of taking running backs later on in the draft rather than on the first day. But whenever the run on rushers takes place, odds are that Carlos Hyde will be one taken fairly early.

The Ohio State stud was the Big Ten Running Back of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten pick as a senior.  In 11 games, he rushed 208 times for 1,521 yards, good for a gaudy 7.3 yards per carry average.  He found the end zone 15 times on the ground, while through the air he caught 16 balls for 147 yards and three touchdowns.  He also finished the season rushing for at least 100-yards in each of his final nine games.

A prototypical power back who at 6-0, 230-pounds bulldozes over opponents with explosive pop, Hyde’s punishing running style has drawn comparisons to Ryan Mathews.  He refuses to be brought down and often drags defenders for an extra couple yards.  The Buckeye also prides himself on ball security, rarely fumbling even though he often absorbs numerous hits.

Hyde isn’t the speediest rusher, and he has dealt with some off the field issues.  Still, teams are always eager to add powerful running backs into the fold, making him potentially among the highest drafted players at his position come the draft.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.66
Bench Press: 19 reps
Vertical Jump: 34.5 inches
Broad Jump: 114.0 inches
