D.J. Fluker was one of the top rookies last year after the Chargers selected him with the 11th overall pick.  It’s quite understandable, then, that Cyrus Kouandjio is receiving a ton of attention leading up the draft as he is a fellow massive tackle fresh off a lauded career at Alabama.

As a bookend to Fluker in 2012, Kouandjio started 14 games at left tackle for the BCS Champion Crimson Tide.  Last season, he was an All-American and All-SEC selection, as well as a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy as top lineman in college football. Alabama had a running back rush for over 100 yards on eight occasions, with much of the damage coming on the left side behind Kouandjio.

A 6-7, 322-pound monster in the run game, once Kouandjio gets his hands on a defender the battle is near over.  He engulfs his opponent, manhandling him in order to open up lanes for his running back.  In the passing game, Kouandjio is surprisingly light on his feet for such a big man.  He is quick off the snap with strong lateral agility that he uses to help establish the pocket for his quarterback.  The tackle also plays with the nasty edge coaches covet.

While the natural skills are all there, Kouandjio is still relatively raw.  There are also questions about a balky knee which some analysts fear may cause him to drop further than he deserves.  Nonetheless, Kouandjio has the potential to be a rock on the offensive line for years to come and figures to be a high draft choice come draft time.
