In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner.
Name: Dee Milliner
Weight: 201 LBS
A true sign of respect, opponents rarely threw in the direction of Alabama’s Dee Milliner during his senior year.
The times they did, he made them pay.
The junior had a whopping 22 passes defensed as a key member of the Tide’s National Championship team. He also recorded 54 tackles and two interceptions as he was named a unanimous selection to the first-team All-American and All-SEC teams.
Milliner is a shutdown corner in every respect of the word as his 22 passes defensed indicate. While he ideally would turn more of those breakups into interceptions, the fact of the matter is if he can’t come up with the ball, he makes sure the receiver doesn’t. With fluid hips and quick feet, he is able to run stride for stride with his opponent. He also likes to jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage and has enough speed to close gaps with the ball in the air.
In addition to being a standout cover corner, Milliner likes to mix it up in the run game. He isn’t afraid of contact and likes to use his body to take on blockers or bring down the ball carrier. Milliner has shown a knack for making the big hit and knocking running backs flat on their back.
Everyone knows about his ability to cover and play the game, but the one question many had about him was his top end speed. Milliner put those concerns out of mind by turning in the second fastest 40-yard dash time for his position at the Combine, running a 4.37.
Overall, Milliner has the combination of NFL-ready size and athleticism to quickly become an impact defender in the league immediately in 2013. That’s one reason why many expect him to be one of the first names off the board in this year’s NFL Draft.
40-yard Dash: 4.37
Vertical Jump: 36.0
Broad Jump: 122.0
3-Cone Drill: 6.95
20-Yard Shuffle: 4.32
