Prospect Profile: Derek Carr

Posted Apr 19, 2014

Learn more about Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Fresno State’s Derek Carr.

Name: Derek Carr
School: Fresno State
Height: 6-2
Weight: 214 pounds
Position: Quarterback

Thus far, Derek Carr’s career has emulated that of his older brother David.  They are both strong armed quarterbacks who thrived under center at Fresno State.  David eventually went on to be the Houston Texan’s number one overall selection in 2002, and now 12 years later Derek has a chance to be a first round pick as well.

The younger Carr turned in a season for the ages in 2013 with the Bulldogs.  He completed 453 of 659 passes for 5,082 yards, 50 touchdowns and just eight interceptions for a 156.1 passer rating.  In the process he became Fresno State’s most prolific quarterback in school history and was just the fourth quarterback in FBS history to eclipse 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season.

A solid athlete who is elusive in the pocket, Carr has great accuracy, completing 68.9 percent of his passes last year. While most of his attempts at Fresno State were quick strikes, he has the ability to torch defenses with the long ball.  Carr also generates great velocity on his throws and possesses the “it” factor many coaches look for when it comes to leadership, poise and toughness.

Carr lacks the ideal measurables at 6-2, 214 pounds and small hands.  He also struggled in the biggest game of the season last year, the Las Vegas Bowl against USC.  Still, with a canon for an arm and a great mind for the game, Carr figures to be starting in the NFL relatively soon.
