Over the years, Lane Johnson’s been a quarterback, tight end and defensive end.

But it’s as an offensive tackle that he has truly made his mark. As a result, he’s earning strong praise and being called a blue chip prospect with a high ceiling.

Perhaps in part due to his experience at other positions, Johnson is a versatile player with a strong cerebral take on the game.  He’s blessed with outstanding athleticism for an offensive tackle, as shown at February’s Scouting Combine.  He ran a 4.72 40-yard dash, which was one/one-hundredth of a second short of the fastest time for an offensive lineman not only this year, but of all time.  Johnson ranked first among linemen in the long jump by leaping 118 inches, while both his vertical jump (34.0 inches) and three-cone drill (7.31) ranked second.

Most importantly, Johnson is able to apply his exceptional athleticism in both pass protection and run blocking. Against the pass, he is able to set the edge well by getting off the line of scrimmage quickly with his fast feet. In fact, his ability to keep his feet in constant motion is considered his best attribute allowing him to gain leverage against the defender while keeping good balance. Meanwhile, against the run, Johnson is able to get to the second level quickly while paving lanes for the running back.

The biggest knock against Johnson is his relative lack of experience, having only started playing on the offensive line in 2011.  Still, the strides he’s made since then combined with his tireless work ethic make many NFL scouts believe he’ll only continue to get better which will especially hold true when he’s under the guidance of the top notch coaches in the NFL.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.72
Bench Press: 28
Vertical Jump: 34.0 inches
Broad Jump: 118.0 inches
3-Cone Drill: 7.31
