Any team looking for a monster to anchor their defensive line will certainly have their interest piqued by Louis Nix.

The Notre Dame standout has drawn comparisons to beefy nose tackles such as Vince Wilfork and B.J. Raji, and he certainly looks the part.  At 6-2, Nix played in the 350’s during his time as a Golden Domer but shed 23 pounds prior to the Combine to show teams he can perform lighter on his feet.

Over three seasons in South Bend, Nix recorded 122 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, eight passes defensed and 2.5 sacks.  His 2013 season was cut short for surgery to fix a torn left meniscus, so his best year came in 2012 when he helped lead Notre Dame to the BCS Championship Game with 50 tackles, 7.5 for a loss, five passes batted down and 2.0 sacks.

With his bulky frame, Nix excels lining up directly over the center or just shading him, allowing him to eat up space and take on multiple linemen. He possesses an ideal combination of girth and strength. For a man his size, Nix is a deft athlete who is quick off the snap with swift, powerful hands to shed blockers.  He is particularly disruptive against the run, and shines with his ability to diagnose plays with natural instincts.

Still, no one will mistake Nix for a speed demon. He turned in a 5.42 40-yard dash at the Combine, the second slowest time for a defensive lineman.  Then again, you don’t need to possess elite straight ahead speed for the position he plays.  Nix has also seen his weight fluctuate at times as he figures out if he can be more successful up in the 350s or a bit lighter in the 330’s. Furthermore, while Nix can be dominant against the run, there are also some pundits who predict he will be a dominant force for two downs before heading to the sideline in passing situations.

For as impressive as Nix is on the gridiron, he is equally engaging off of it.  He charmed the media with a witty press conference at the Combine and is well known for his propensity for humorous takes on Twitter.  Overall, Nix figures to make a big impact in the middle for years to come.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 5.42
Vertical Jump:  25.5 inches
Broad Jump: 97.0 inches
