It seems as though this time of year, Mock Draft fever infects every NFL pundit and expert in the media.  While many have differing opinions, one constant in nearly each mock draft has been Luke Joeckel being selected very early on.

In most cases, they have him going first overall to the Kansas City Chiefs, and it’s easy to see why.

A hulking 6-foot-6 presence weighing 306 pounds, Joeckel is a strong anchor to place on the left side of the offensive line.  His top trait is that he is technically sound, playing the position the way it was meant to be played.   With nimble feet and good initial burst, he is an exceptional athlete who can block in a multitude of ways.  Joeckel possesses a good first step and is very quick and smooth moving laterally. He is also a student of the game, able to read the defense keenly before the ball is even snapped.  From there, he is smart enough to recognize schemes and pick up his assignment immediately.

Still, Joeckel isn’t without his weaknesses.  Many scouting reports say he needs to improve both his upper and lower body strength by bulking up.  Yet many expect him to do just that with the proper guidance at the NFL level. He also only has so-so pop at the line of scrimmage, but that will improve as he builds up his strength as well.

Overall, Joeckel is one of the top tier prospects available in this year’s draft class as an offensive tackle who is strong in both pass protection and at paving lanes in the running game.  Any team that drafts him will be penciling Joeckel in as their premier left tackle for the next decade.
