There are three quarterbacks on the Bolts roster, but when it comes to talking about 2013, only one man attempted a pass – Philip Rivers.

In his 10th year, Rivers posted arguably his finest season to date, earning a trip to his fifth Pro Bowl.  He completed 378-of-544 attempts for a team-record, career-best and NFL-leading 69.5% completion percentage.  His 378 completions were a team record. Rivers also threw for 4,478 yards (third highest of his career) and 32 touchdowns (second most) to just 11 interceptions for a career and team record-tying passer rating of 105.5.  That mark is nearly 10 points higher than his 96.0 career passer rating. Rivers extended his team record streak of 25-plus touchdown seasons to six, becoming just the third QB in NFL history to do so.  He also threw for over 4,000 yards for the fifth time in his career to become only the sixth in NFL history with at least five 4,000-plus yard seasons.   In the postseason, number 17 completed 30-of-43 attempts for three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 116.9 passer rating.

As a result, Rivers was named the Pro Football Writers of America Comeback Player of the year, joining Adrian Peterson, Matthew Stafford, Michael Vick and Tom Brady as the last five winners of the award.  He is one of three finalists for the FedEx Air Player of the Year as well.

Charlie Whitehurst was Rivers backup for the season.  He didn’t throw a single pass but saw action in mop-up duty on rare occasions, simply handing off the ball.  In the preseason, Whitehurst was 29-of-50 for 335 yards and two touchdowns for a 66.7 passer rating.

Rookie Brad Sorensen was inactive each week for the Chargers.   Still, the seventh-round draft choice had an impressive preseason, completing 24-of-45 passes (53.3%) for 272 yards and two touchdowns and a passer rating of 68.0.
