Spurlock Thrives as Unsung Hero

Posted Dec 9, 2012

Wide receiver Micheal Spurlock finally made the impact the San Diego Chargers hoped for when they signed him in the offseason.

After spending the first four games on the season with the Bolts without recording a reception, he was waived and picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In six games with Jacksonville, Spurlock recorded 14 catches for 121 yards and one touchdown, while returning six kickoffs for 118 yards and six punts for 51 yards.

After being claimed off waivers from the Jaguars, Spurlock had his best game as a Charger.

Spurlock was targeted seven times, and all seven times, he hauled in the catch, finishing the game with 64 yards. Six of his seven catches resulted in a first down, with five of those six coming on third down.

“I just kind of picked up where I left off at,” said Spurlock.  “I just tried to go out there, make a play and help us get a win.  Luckily, I came in on third down and got first downs.  It just worked out.  It was part of the game where it worked out.”

Spurlock’s impact was most felt in the first half, when he hauled in four catches for 39 yards. His 11-yard reception of third-and-eight in the first quarter prolonged the San Diego drive and put the Chargers in Steelers territory. As a result, Nick Novak kicked a booming 51-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Spurlock caught three passes, which resulted in three first downs. His last catch of the half came on third-and-10 at the Pittsburgh 47-yard line with less than two minutes left on the clock. Spurlock took the pass for 12 yards. Later in the drive, Novak kicked his second field goal of the day, this one from 39 yards out to give the Chargers a 13-0 lead. Spurlock’s longest catch of the day was a 13-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

“He gave us a lift,” Chargers head coach Norv Turned said of Spurlock. “There are plays that we run throughout the year and he did a good job of getting open. I think he matched up well with what Pittsburgh was trying to do from a coverage standpoint against us. Philip (Rivers) did a good job of getting the ball to him. That’s probably the key to the game. Offensively, we converted third downs.”
