Weddle's Top Notch Pick Lifts Bolts

Posted Dec 22, 2013

Eric Weddle had a key interception for the San Diego Chargers in their victory over the Oakland Raiders.

The prettiest play of the game couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

The Chargers had just committed their second turnover of the game deep in Oakland territory when Eric Weddle flipped the script.  Matt McGloin dropped back to pass and fired one over the middle.  Dropping back into coverage, Weddle reached up and back with his left arm to bat the ball in the air.  As his momentum took him to the ground, he kept the ball alive by tipping it to himself with his right hand before cradling it in as he dove full extension to the ground.

“It was nice,” he said.  “I kind of was in the way, was able to get my hand on it. I had a few chances today to get some picks just by some coverages they put me in and that was the one chance I got. Great, great game, especially change of possessions with the turnovers and us responding”

Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin said he saw Weddle but couldn’t have imagined he made the play on the ball he was able to make.

“I just thought I could have gotten it over him,” he said.  “Rod (Streater) was coming open and I thought I got just enough on it to get it over him but he got his hand on it, made a good play and stayed with the ball throughout the air to come down with it.”

The play drew a huge ovation from a packed Qualcomm Stadium, and even bigger ones from his teammates.

That is except for Shareece Wright, who had some good-natured fun with Weddle, telling him he stole the interception from him.

“That was mine!” he laughed after the game. “It was coming right at me.  He took my interception.  I was going to pick that ball if he didn’t. But really that was a great play by a great player.  He did a great job reading the play and made a big play.”

Wright also noted how it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Chargers. The play followed a Rivers interception and led directly to a touchdown.

“Again, complementary football,” he said.  “It’s just about having our offenses back.  When plays like that happen you have to respond, and that’s what we did.  We got the ball back right where they left off, and it was big that we were able to do that as a defense.”

Head Coach Mike McCoy agreed with Wright’s assessment of the play when he addressed it after the game.

“It’s great for the offense to get a sudden touchdown,” he said.  “You get seven points there and it’s a game of field position. I think that when you get a turnover like that, the offense is going to feed off of it and they did a nice job of getting into the end zone. That was big for our football team at that point in time.”
