Woodhead Brings New Versatility to Chargers Backfield

Posted Mar 20, 2013

The San Diego Chargers officially signed hard-working, versatile running back Danny Woodhead today.

Danny Woodhead’s path to the NFL has been a hard one filled with ups and downs.

From Division II Chadron State to being an undrafted rookie free agent with the New York Jets to becoming a significant player for the New England Patriots, Woodhead’s journey to becoming one of the most versatile running backs in the NFL has been anything but easy.

There have been plenty of opportunities for the 5-foot-8, 200-pounder to quit along the way, but that’s not the kind of person, or player, he is. And it’s that hard-working, never give up mentality that is a major reason why he has found a niche as a productive running back in the NFL.

Woodhead has averaged nearly five yards per carry and over 10 yards per reception during his five-year career.    Last season he was the Patriots second-leading rusher with 76 carries, 301 yards and four touchdowns while catching 40 passes for 446 yards and three scores.  The jack-of-all-trades also returned two kickoffs for 43 yards.

Now, Woodhead is bringing his strong work ethic and versatility to the San Diego Chargers.

“My job is to go out there and do the best I can at whatever I’m asked to do,” he said.  “That’s what I’m going to do.  I’ll go out and work hard and be the best player I can be for this team…I’m going to do whatever the coaches ask.  If it’s running a route, I’m going to go out there and try to get open. If it’s running the ball, I’m going to try to get as many yards as possible.  If it’s blocking, it’s blocking.  Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to go out there and do everything I can to be successful and help the team out.”

Standing a few yards away from the practice fields he now calls home, the dynamic back issued his sentiments about joining the Bolts.

“Just the excitement that’s here and where this team and organization is going, it made me excited to play football,” said Woodhead. “I’m excited about the energy (General Manager Tom Telesco and Head Coach Mike McCoy) bring.  I think that’s going to (rub) off on the players and everyone in the organization. Just talking to Mike and Tom, and what they have planned for this team and how they’re going to run things (got me excited). They want good quality people who obviously have talent, want to be team players and make the team be as good as they can.  And I’m going to do everything I can to help the team out, because it is a team game.”
