Bio

The San Diego Chargers used their first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft to select former University of Alabama tackle D.J. Fluker.

A cornerstone for the two-time defending BCS Champion Crimson Tide, Fluker started all 27 games at right tackle the last two seasons. A second-team Associated Press All- America and first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick as a junior in 2012, Fluker graded out at 98.6% on his blocking assignments, surrendered only four sacks, and was flagged just two times as Alabama finished the season 13-1 and 7-1 in the SEC. Among his 2012 statistics, Fluker totaled 90 knockdowns, 22 pancakes and 15 touchdown-resulting blocks for an offense that averaged 445.5 yards per game, 31st nationally and fourth in the SEC. The Crimson Tide were even better on the ground, ranking 16th nationally and second in the SEC with 227.5 rushing yards per game.

Fluker left Alabama with a year of eligibility remaining after earning his degree in health studies in Dec. 2012. Since he graduated, Fluker was granted permission to compete in the 2013 Senior Bowl and its week-long practices, which helped raise his stock heading into April’s draft.

A New Orleans native, Fluker’s family was forced to flee the Bayou when Hurricane Katrina reared her ugly head in 2005. His family moved to Mobile, Alabama before relocating to Biloxi, Mississippi and ultimately Foley, Alabama. Fluker played his sophomore high school season at Mobile’s McGill-Toolen Catholic High School as a defensive lineman and his junior year at Biloxi High School. As a senior, he enrolled at Foley, where the coaching staff converted him into an All-America offensive tackle. Highly sought-after by a number of major college programs, Fluker chose Alabama over Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Clemson and Florida State.
