Bio

It was a rather remarkable turn of events that led Mike Windt to become the Chargers’ long snapper as a rookie in 2010. The first domino fell when David Binn, the team’s all-time leader for career games played, was felled by a hamstring injury. With Binn on the “Reserve-Injured” list, the Chargers went through three veterans, James Dearth, Ryan Neill and Ethan Albright, yet none panned out. Dearth and Neill were both sidelined by injuries, while Albright was cut, opening the door for Windt. Signing the Cincinnati native proved to be a fortuitous move as Windt proved to be a capable snapper for punts and field goals, and less than a year later, the Chargers severed ties with Binn, who ended his tenure in San Diego having appeared in an amazing 256 career games.

While Windt still has a long ways to go to match the 17 seasons Binn logged in San Diego, he’s off to a good start. In March, the Bolts locked Windt up for the long haul, inking him to a new four-year deal before the start of free agency.

Windt has demonstrated pin-point accuracy on snaps. Last season, he had a hand in Mike Scifres setting a new team record for single-season punting average, while two seasons ago, he helped Nick Novak set a franchise mark for single season field goals of 40 and 50 yards or longer.

Windt is engaged to Kate Fredrikson, an oncology nurse at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The couple plans to wed in April 2014.

Windt’s hobbies include golf, stand-up paddleboarding and spending time with his English Bulldog, Hemingway. He also has a taste for fine wines and music. Two of his favorite musicians are Michael Buble’ and Frank Sinatra.
