Bio

Johnston is in his 22nd season as director of public relations and 32nd with the team. He is responsible for managing the public image and overall communications strategy for the Chargers.

Johnston is in his 22nd season as director of public relations and 32nd with the team. He is responsible for managing the public image and overall communications strategy for the Chargers. This includes all organizational messaging, media relations, publications and content for all of the team's media platforms, including the team’s website – www.Chargers.com. He is the team’s primary liaison for the team’s and NFL’s broadcast partners, local and national media outlets, and team-produced media.

Johnston joined the Chargers in March, 1979 while attending San Diego State University. He earned a degree in journalism in 1981, and was named public relations assistant that year. He served as assistant director of public relations (1984-87) and director of community relations (1988-89), while also overseeing community outreach and public affairs from 1990-00.

Johnston was born in La Mesa, California, and attended Helix High School. He is on the board of directors of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, San Diego. He was honored by the national HDSA in October 2008 for his support of the organization. While serving as president of the board, the San Diego Chapter was named the national HDSA Chapter of the Year in 2005 and ’07. An avid runner, Johnston has run the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon 12 times and raised more than $500,000 to cure Hunington's Disease.

Johnston and his wife, Ramona, have a son, Jared, and a daughter, Hayley.
